Andy Robinson's injury-time winner sent Leeds into the last 16 of the Carling Cup after Hartlepool had led twice in an exciting encounter at Elland Road.
Andy Monkhouse headed Hartlepool ahead inside two minutes but they allowed Robert Snodgrass in soon after.
Joel Porter rifled Hartlepool back in front on 33 minutes but Enoch Showunmi forced the ball over after half-time.
Extra-time loomed until winger Robinson accepted Jonny Howson's pass and blasted in an unstoppable shot.
